Any time the eye is irritated it will tear, even when the eyes are excessively dry. Chronic irritation is painful and it requires a visit to the eye doctor. In fact any tearing which does not respond to over the counter drops should be evaluated. A tear duct may be blocked which means tears cannot drain, so tears drip down the face.
